Today is the kickoff for The Big Read event here in DC. The Big Read is through the National Endowment for the Arts and they want to create "a nation of readers." The book they have chosen is There Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston. It's one of my favorite books of course - see my list at right. The first sentence has capitvated me since I first read it: "Ships at a distance have everyman's wish on board." Perfection. I didn't even know that the NEA had this event planned when I thought of the book club, which I'm very excited about.

The Big Read kickoff was great. I encourage everyone in the DC area to check out at least one of the programs happening between now and May 19!
