Nivea Body Smooth Sensation Body Oil

Nivea_smooth_sensation_body_oil In NOLA it was hot.  Super hot.  I totally forgot how the south has two seasons - hot and hotter.  I remembered this when I decided not to put on lotion and stick with my new Nivea Body Smooth Sensation Body Oil.  This oil is great for the summer.  It's much lighter than baby oil and has such a soft and faint scent that you don't have to worry with it interfering with your fragrance.

If you are traveling bring this with you.  The majority of my lotions are thick.  That's just the way I like them, but with the heat and humidity that will be coming in the next few weeks, I can't wear them.  I will be wearing this all summer.

If you have loose shimmer powder, you can easily create your own shimmer lotion.  I added some loose bronzer powder and had my lovely shimmy, shimmy, cocoa puff glow.

Get your glow on and Happy Tuesday.

The Mandarin Oriental Spa Vitamin Infusion Facial

Mo_amethyst_roomI had to include a spa in my Mother's Day roundup.  I am the go-to person in my family so I gave myself a gift this month.  I love a good spa.  The kind that is so good when you wake up from a treatment you have to ask yourself - where am I?  This is what I asked myself last week when I spent time at The Mandarin Oriental's Spa here in DC.  I needed some getaway time because the next few months are packed.  Work hard, play hard, work harder.  (Thank goodness for overtime!)  The great thing about the Mandarin in DC is location.  It's a 10 minute walk from me.  Maybe that is a bad thing :)  As I entered the spa I immediately felt relaxed.  I was then whisked away to change and spent time in the vitality pool and amethyst steam room before my treatments began.

Mo_treatment_roomI had the best facial of my life thus far from a spa.  Yes, I said it.  I usually have facials that are for maintenance.  For me facials are like going to the doctor.  You have to do them but they are never in a fancy hotel.  I don't dip in the vitality pool, relax in the sauna, or take it easy in the relaxation room.  This was a treat.  The Mandarin's new Vitamin Infusion Facial with Somme Institute Skincare left me with a glow that even The Don recognized.  The next day I did something I never do.  I went to work with only mascara and lip gloss on.  All the girls were like "your makeup is so pretty."  I had to explain to them about this facial.  Shae was an excellent technician and she is also a licensed massage therapist.  Her massages are so good that you will need to be awaken when it's over.

My mother is coming to visit this summer and we will definitely spend time at the Mandarin in July.  They need to put this hotel in Houston.  ASAP.

Happy Hump Day!

Bath & Body Works Enchanted Orchid

Enchanted_orchidIt's only 10 days until Mother's day and I'm here to help you give a great mother's day present.  There will be many options that I'm throwing out there for mom, aunts, grandmothers, cousins, and any woman you feel deserve something special for Mother's Day.  My first pick is Bath and Body Works Enchanted Orchid collection.  I normally can't go wrong with the potion ladies of the family here and this scent is perfect for that Texas and Louisiana heat.  The scents has notes of orchid, iris, gardenia, and vanilla for a floral burst of fragrance.  If you pick up a pre-packaged basket, you save the trouble of wrapping.

Burt's Bees Almond Milk Beeswax Hand Creme

Burts_bees_almond_milkThank you to all the readers who have gone on this green journey.  It's been such a fun run that I am going to continue buying, using, and playing with more green products.  Burt's Bees Almond Milk Beeswax Hand Creme is always on my nightstand along with a lot of books, magazines, reading glasses, and lip balm.  This thick hand cream moisturizes my dry hands. If you wash you hands a lot - this cream is great.  Be very careful after putting it on while reading.  It will leave an imprint on your pages.  I have many marked up books.

Happy Wednesday!

Dr. Hauschka Moor Lavender Body Oil

Dr_hauschka Dr. Hauschka has been in my life for  a very long time.  My favorite product of the line is their body oils.  I can't get enough of them.  My first purchase of the line was the Rose Body Oil, which led to try the Rosemary Body Oil, which reminded me of food and made me hungry.  I realized that was not one for me.  The Lemon Body Oil was great, but a friend told me I smelled like a centerpiece.

I finally settled on the Moor Lavender Body Oil and we have been good friends every since.

Happy Monday.

ME Melia Cancun Yhi Spa

Me_melia_yhi_spa

What do you see when you look to the left?  I see relaxation, tranquility, and the fact that I already miss this spa.  This comes to mind in my description of the ME Melia's Yhi Spa.  I love relaxing in the spa on holiday.  I've finally learned how not to over plan and return home exhausted.  As we walked into the Yhi Spa we realized this was easy to do.  Yhi also carries one of my favorite lines, Sundari, which I will be writing about later this month.

Yhi_spa_poolThe spa wants you to arrive an hour early to pass through their “water ritual” hydrotherapy system. Basically it’s a path of heated and scented massage showers that you go through before stepping into the spa therapy pool. The pool has an underwater massage chair where you look out at the ocean before your appointment.

I suggest the Purification Flowers Wrap which detoxifies the body. They soak a Mexican blanket in lavender, chamomile, and Jamaica blossoms. Then you are wrapped until all the flower mixtures penetrate the body. Then, and only then, can you lose your mind with the Xtabentun Bath Ritual. It is a decadent as it sounds. Anise seed oil is blended with mineral salts for a relaxing bath. This is followed by a massage in the water and out of the water.

As I left the Yhi I vowed to return.  New Year's Eve 2008 is looking rather tempting.

International Orange Balance Deodorant

Io_balanceI have really enjoyed the "green" theme for this month.  I also love reading your comments and emails.  Thanks for the support.  A new favorite find is International Orange products.  They are natural, fair-trade, organic and created by hand.  It's not just a product, it's an experience.  I'm particularly fond of the Balance deodorant.  It's part of the "do more yoga" gym bag and perfect for having a post-yoga-glow meal of sushi and plum wine with Niya (I call her the "karma goddess").  I spray the Balance all over to freshen up.  IO is a spa, yoga studio, and lounge in San Francisco.  The next time I am in SF I have a list of places I need to visit and IO is one of them.

Dashing Diva Mon Cherie Cordial

Mon_cherie_cordial_4I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  The cherry blossoms are blooming here, the sun was out, and a nice chill was in the air.

My weekend was busy.  "The Don" threw his annual family dinner which had people arriving at 3 p.m. and leaving past 1 a.m.  As many of you know this was way past my bed time.  It was a great day full of good food, laughter, and living, but my poor nails took a beating.  I was chopping, serving, cooking and washing up a storm.  Needless to say my nail lady was not too happy yesterday when I went in for a manicure.  "What-happened-to-your-nails?  They-were-so-long-and-now-they-are-short-and-all-broken."  I explained and she chastised me for not having cleaning gloves when washing the dishes.

This wasn't my house, so I didn't have any.  After filing, cleaning, and shaping my nails looked amazing.  I wanted the same color for my hands that I got on my toes and she was like "red will chip easy."  I said "not this one."  I am in love with Dashing Diva's nail colors.  Their polishes survived five days of Fashion Week without a single chip.  I didn't apply a top coat the next day or anything that you are supposed to after a manicure.

My favorite now is Mon Cherie Cordial.  I can't wait to get back to their salon for another manicure and to pick up some more polishes.  If you are ever in NY, stop by one of their many locations for a manicure.  This polish will make you a believer in the power of nail polish.

Olay Body Quench Mousse

Olay_quench_mousseThe minute I saw the new Olay Quench Mousse I thought "Whoa Nelly!"  My initial thought was this looks like a hot mess.  I didn't care for the Quench Lotion so I didn't think I would like the mousse.  Mousse and moisturizer seems like an oxymoron in a can.  I can admit when I'm wrong.  Okay, I was wrong.  The mousse is perfect for a summer moisturizer when you don't want some thick as shortening that causes you to sweat immediately upon walking outside.  I have a 5 minute walk to the metro for work and this will work perfect when it's hot like fire here this summer.  It's just like a mousse for your hair.  You shake really well and then spray into your hands and create a light and airy body moisturizer.  Immediately after applying - I was moisturized and soft.  Despite my initial hesitation, I am happy that this ended up in my basket.  I know I will be adding another by the time May gets here.  This mousse is not going to last long in the arsenal.

Noodle & Boo's Glowology Sugar Mama Honey Bar Soap

Glowology_bar_2I have been surrounded by lots of babies the past few months.  It seems that they are all boys too which is really funny.  I need some pink - somewhere - in this family.  Now, there will be another boy addition to the family in July.  I'm very excited because I get to try the baby products before we give them to the baby.  Some I plan on sending, but never quite get around too because I keep them for myself.  That's the case with Noodle & Boo's Glowology Sugar Mama Honey Bar Soap.  I'm not a bar soap type of girl.  I can rock a shower gel and/or oil any day, but I stay away from bar soaps.  They are just so blah to me.  Well N&B has changed my mind.  It's so gentle that it works for big and little babies.  The next time you find out a friend is expecting, send her a gift.  Moms need to be pampered as well and not just on Mother's Day.

Happy Monday.

My Skin is Like Butter, Baby

Skin_like_butter_2 Shea butter is our friend.  Repeat.  Shea butter is OUR friend.  It is my addiction.  I like it in glosses, lip balms, body butters, and now . . . drum roll please . . . Skin Like Butter Shea Oil Lotion.  Ladies, you will thank the beauty body gods for this lotion.  It is a decadent, rich, creamy, and luxurious lotion.  It will hydrate your skin with all types of oils - shea, avocado and jojoba.  It comes in five scents and an unscented version.  It is highly fragrant, therefore, I suggest the unscented for the day so it doesn't take away from your fragrance.  The lavender is divine for relaxation purposes.  I'm doing an entire "prepare for bed routine" like a kid - bath, boring book, great sleep.  It's been working for me.  If you are not a fan of body butters this lotion is a great alternative.  It really does make you skin feel like butter.  Isn't that what it's really about.

Happy Monday mes amies!

Shea Radiance Whipped Shea Butter

Shea_radianceblack_orchidHello dear friend!  This is the greeting that I use whenever I apply my Shea Radiance Whipped Shea Butter.  This whipped delicacy of body butter has me feeling all warm and fuzzy all over.  That's great that I'm feeling warm today, because on Monday I didn't know whether it was summer or winter because the temp reached 70 degrees here in DC.  Of course, it was back to the cold on Monday night, but I was able to be "tooling" around with sunglasses on.  [Tooling = running errands and doing absolutely nothing].  I rested so well last night that this morning I actually took a bath instead of a shower, foregoing a workout, but it was worth it.  My skin absorbed this shea butter's richness and sublime scent.  I paired it with my Tom Ford Black Orchid and I'm smelled like a vacation in a the Orient.

I'm ready to Bon Voyage!  I guess I can wait until April.

Jurlique Lavender Hand Cream

Jurlique_hand_creamIt seems this year is already flying by to me.  I was looking at my new year expectations and realized there are a few things I definitely need to get started on.  I definitely need to organize my nightstand which is full of books, creams, and lip balms.  I recently added Jurlique's Lavender Hand Cream to the top of night stand.  This hand cream is rich, creamy, and the lavender scent isn't too overpowering.  I like a lush hand cream, not some weak-as-pond-water-cream that's like water when you apply it.  The cream also comes in Rose, which is too sweet for me, but the Citrus is great to have at work or to use in the kitchen, especially if you wash your hands a lot from cooking.  There is also a travel size for your pocketbook.

Have a great day.

Quench Shea All-Over Oil

Shea_all_over_oil_2Yesterday was one of those days where you have to laugh to keep from crying.  After work, I headed home because I wanted to get a workout in before starting dinner and handling business.  Then off I go out the door and wham!  I realize that I'm on the outside and my keys are on the inside.  Locked out.  I just laughed to myself.  I went across the hall to the neighbors and borrowed their phone.  When I told them what happened they said "that happened to us last week."  I called the office, where I always leave a spare key and asked my dear friend Celina to messenger the key to me.  Thirty minutes later the key arrives.  I could have easily decided not to work out, but I pressed through - laughing while on the elliptical machine.  Once entering my abode, I recanted the story to my mom who told me she was on her way home - my aunt had locked herself out of the house.  It must have been "lock yourself out of the house day."  After all this the only thing I wanted to do was take a relaxing bath.  I added some of my Quench All-Over Body Oil made with shea butter.  I not only used it in the bath, but on me after I got out of the tub.  The oil is unscented, but I added a few drops of lavender essential oil for relaxation. I could a healthy squash gratin and watched Amelie again.

It seems my spa day had turned out well after all.

Borghese Fango Brilliante Brightening Mud

Fango_brillante Thank you all for the warm wishes.  I'm feeling much better.  I guess my body was saying to slow it down a bit.  I listened loud and clear.  I also started the spring "body beautiful" campaign of getting back in the swing of things.  To start off - a full body mud mask.  I've written about my love of Borghese's Fango Mud, but when I found out that Bloomingdale's had the Fango Mud in Pink I nearly lost my marbles.  It's the same fabulous mud, but the pink is so cute in the bath caddy that it was hard to open up and use it.  I woke up this morning and decided today is the day.  Let's see if the mud get me in the mood, despite the 17 degree temperature today.   I did my mud thing while listening to the morning news and drinking a cup of tea.  Once I finished the full body application, then "showered, shaved and shined" - my body was thanking me.

I also thanked myself  for having some "me time."

Thymes Red Cherie Body Wash

Thymes_red_cherieThe last few mornings I have been so tired.  The kind of tired that means I haven't gotten my usual 8 hours of sleep.  Yes, Fashion Week is fun, but it's a lot of work.  I find myself falling into the bed and waking up to hit the ground again.  The difference from being here and working in DC is my bed time.  I don't normally go to sleep at 2 am.  Last night I was able to relax, watch the Super Bowl, and read a few magazines.  Today, I have more meetings and more backstage beauty.  To wake me up before the addition of caffeine is Thymes Red Cherie Body Wash.  This fruity and floral shower gel is a great wake up remedy.  It is full of moisturizers, which help keep this body beautiful.  The scent is addicting and helps to revitalize me every time I use it, but if I could just get to bed earlier I might not need as much fake energy.

Have a happy Monday.

P.S. More Fashion Week backstage coming later.

Ted Gibson - My Hair and Body Guru

Ted_gibson_body_shampoo Once upon a time in a land far, far away from the big city lived a young man obsessed with hair.   This young man had visions of Hollywood grandeur and splendor.  His dreams turned into reality because he is a top celebrity hairstylist.  That young man is none other than the super talented Ted Gibson.  In another part of the state lived a young girl obsessed with beauty.  Well, the young girl turned into an even bigger and more beauty obsessed lady.  That girl decided to start a beauty blog almost two years and last summer realized she wanted to grow her out to use Ted's products.  Imagine to the delight of her beauty ancestors when this little lady met Mr. Gibson yesterday at Henri Bendel's in NYC.  Words could not express her joy.

Ted_and_iImagine how this woman felt when he suggested she grow her hair out a few more inches, come to his salon for a color, and a personal hair cut with him.  You know this lady went home and had visions of Ted Gibson's hands dancing in her hair - with products, blow dryers, and flat irons.  I am fortunate that this young lady is moi!

As I prepared for work today being treated by his styling sheets and his brand new body shampoo, I counted my blessings of love, grace, prosperity, and beauty. Oh yeah and for a friend having a camera.

To Ted with Love, Julia

Favorite "Beauty" Things of 2007

Favorite_things_2007Thanks to the wonderful Annie at Blogdorf Goodman for gathering a group of bloggers to participate in their top beauty choices for Favorite Things 2007.   Beauty had much excitement for me this year that it's hard to narrow this list down.  Thanks to all my readers who continue to read the blog.  I couldn't do it without you.  My favorite beauty things for 2007 are as follows:

  1. Space NK.  It's not a "thing" but a wonderful apothecary in New York. Space NK has changed the concept of the beauty store.  It's one of the few stores that has a wonderful niche line of beauty products.  Every time I go to this store, it puts a smile on my face.
  2. Barbie Loves MAC Collection.  I had to make myself stop using my Fab blush for fear that I may run out.  I want MAC to make this part of the permanent collection, but I don't think it will.  I still enjoy looking at my Barbie Doll all dolled up with her MAC train case.  Flawless collection.
  3. Lisa Hoffman Seven-Day Skincare Packettes.  I love how well this skincare line travels, which is the main reason it was created.
  4. Kate Somerville ExfoliKate.   What can I say?  This product will always be in my shower.  I love how it makes my skin feel after using it.
  5. Beauty Blender Sponge. I purchased this at the Makeup Show in NY and I still love it's application for foundation and tinted moisturizer.  I should have bought the small travel sponges to come with me wherever I go.  I can't get enough.
  6. Metallic Eye Collection by Bobbi Brown. I think Bobbi shocked all us beauty junkies with the immaculate eye shadow collection.  Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.
  7. Becca Luminous Tinted Moisturizer in Mink.  I love how this melts evenly on my skin.  I was lucky enough to score a stash when Sephora discontinued them.  Lucky me.
  8. Prescriptives Custom Blend Bronzer.  The perfect match bronzer for me to have perfectly bronzed skin.  I still get giddy using it.
  9. My fragrances. I scored lots of fragrances this year and I love each and every one of them.
  10. Belle Fleur Candles.  The Mayan Tuberose puts me to sleep every night.  It still as luxurious as ever.
  11. Esens Custom Made Fragrance.  This is new, but it's already rocking my world.
  12. Completion of my Level 1 Yoga Teacher Certification.  Yoga as brought so much to my life. My body is strong, my mind is healthy, and my spirit is fulfilled.  Yoga is definitely beautiful.
  13. Bobbi Brown Beauty Breakfast at Bergdorf's.  I am forever grateful for this opportunity to meet Bobbi where it all started, the Beauty Level of BG.  What a fun day.
  14. Dolores as my writing partner and the cuteness of my two new nephews - Josiah and Colin.  These things made my year so special.  I am so blessed to have them in my life.
  15. All my travels.  I have been on planes, trains, and automobiles a lot this year.  It was so much fun, tiring, but fun.

I wish everyone a lovely, happy, and beauty-filled new year and 2008.

  • Keri Long Lasting Hand Cream

Keri_hand_creamBarcelona has been a dream and now we are in Cadiz for my friend Melissa's wedding.  One thing about Europe in December.  It's still cold.  Not the snow-is-falling-on-my-head kind of cold, but my hands are dry, cracked and in need of repair - kind of cold.  This is what I have been experiencing.  Apparently, le beau has been experiencing it too.  But, you know men. They can't admit that they really like the hand cream you've been using.  I understand.  I have been traveling with Keri Long Lasting Hand Cream in my bag for a few days now and I'm very happy with the results.  I'm personally attached to all my beauty products, but needed a hand cream to get me through the trip.  I should have brought another tube.  I only planned on using it on me and now I'm sharing.  I'm the only girl of four boys.  Who me, share?  Not likely, but I'm learning.

    Adios.

Thom Fleming Rainbow Sorbet Body Scrub

Thom_fleming_scrub I usually don't like my scrubs with too much sweetness.  I love great scents, but sometimes even I can get overwhelmed.  I adore a good body scrub that gives me that as "soft as a baby's bottom" feeling.  Plus, it needs to be moisturizing.  The kind of moisturizing that leaves soft supple skin and not the dehydrated extra flaky-as-a-snake-scale-skin.  Well, Thom Fleming Rainbow Sorbet Body Scrub is such a beauty item.  The scent is a mixture of lemon, raspberry, and lemon that is so delectable you have to stop yourself  from sniffing your arm over and over again.  It's my new favorite scrub and is providing so much joy in my life right now that it has me singing The Rainbow Connection.

"Why are there so many songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
And rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we've been told and some choose to believe it
I know they're wrong, wait and see.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Written by Paul Williams and used by Kermit the Frog of the Muppets, Jim Henson Productions.

Have a great and happy Monday filled with rainbows and lip gloss.

    Laduree for Sephora

Laduree_for_sephora My heart is melting with the beauty of these soaps.  I just found out that the most gorgeous tea house in the world, Laduree, has teamed up with Sephora to create limited edition beauty items.  Laduree is know world wide for it's macaroons and it's super cute tea house in Paris is a must for any beauty junkie in need of a respite from shopping.  The problem with these products?  They are only available in Europe and Canada.  I hope that when I get to Europe in a few weeks they have a few products left.  I love these soaps and I must get them.  I must.  The beauty of these makes me want a macaroon, a cup of tea, a warm blanket, Renee Fleming singing, an engaging book, and a nap after wards.

Laduree_for_sephora_2 But, I will top all this off by storing my boat load of gold bangles in this beautiful vanity.  There is no way I could dirty this up by putting products in.  It's too pretty.  The line also has glosses, bath salts, and powder puffs.  Lord knows I love me a powder puff.  I can just see this sitting on my dresser.  This collection is too beautiful for words.  I just hope next year, they create this for the U.S.  It would make my addiction a lot easier.

Laduree for Sephora is definitely all about the pretty.

    Nail Aid to the Rescue

Nail_aid_3n1The cold weather has everything that can be dry on me, dry like like the desert heat.  After a month working and going through numerous boxes, my nails took the beating of a lifetime.  At all my manicures they apply a nail strengthener, polish, and top coat and I leave with immaculate and groomed hands.  Well, it's taking a lot longer to get the grooming back in my life.  When I returned to my trusty manicurist she took one look at my hands and announced, loudly, "What happened to your nails?  They look like crap."  "Well . . . um, I know," I replied.  This didn't seem good enough.  After explaining my work situation she eased up a little.  Then pronounced "if you don't apply the Nail Aid like you are supposed to, how are your nails supposed to stay pretty."  Good point.  After two weeks, I can tell the difference in the hardness, texture, and length of my nails.  Nail Aid is available at certain Whole Foods or on their website.  Free shipping for 2 items or more and for only $6.50 a bottle.  My nails are looking like themselves, but I must find out what Ms. Erika is wearing in this photo.  The cranberry color is perfect for a Christmas party I will be attending on the 8th.

Fraiche Has Swizzled Into My Life

Soap_24 A few years back the group Outkast had a song with the lyrics "ain't no body dope as me, I'm dress so fresh and clean (so fresh and so clean, clean)."  I thought of this song while soaking and relaxing in a tub full of bath swizzles and soaps from Fraiche Bath Company.  I'm trying to take as much "me time" as I possibly can right now and this soap is adding to an enjoyable bathing excursion.  The beauty of the soaps are a big selling point for me.  You can actually leave them on display because they are just that pretty to look at.  My bathing junkies will love these products.  They will make great gifts for those women who we know that give to everyone else, but themselves.  I am enjoying the spicy little pumpkin, it's decadent, smells divine, and won't go to my thighs :)  The potion lady is going to get the honeysuckle swizzle and gardenia soap, while aunt Peepsie is going to get the hula-la swizzle and soap.

A bath is a terrible thing to waste.  Enjoy.

    Oprah's Favorite Things

UPDATE:  I didn't mention the Kai Body Butter, but everyone knows I love fragrance and I love me some Kai Perfume.  Well, I just placed my order and I am a happy, happy lady right now.  It could be the Malbec, but I don't think so.

OprahOprah's Favorite Things Show was on today.  I have used her guide for gift giving all through the year, not just the holidays.  I have steered people to the list and made a lot of people really happy.  Thanks Lady O.  A huge highlight for for me is knowing she picked one of my favorite kitchen items.  The Kitchen Aid artisan mixer in red.  I absolutely adore it.  I bought this for my birthday two years ago, in the exact same color, it's great for making pasta (using the attachments), but it's so good when you mix a homemade biscuit recipe and you aren't trying to get your hands dirty with buttermilk.  Last year I went through a biscuit making period, my butt also went through it too.  Every year I buy a great fabulous cooking gadget for my birthday/Christmas present.  This year it's this

Another highlight of the list is my all-time favorite board game, Scrabble.  I never leave for a trip without my travel Scrabble that the potion lady picked up for me a few year's ago.  Mama if you are reading - me wants this one for "the birthday" next month.  Oh yeah, and the new Martha Stewart Cookbook with some of her product line from Macy's thrown in.
