Yarok Hair Treatment at The Hiro Haraguchi Salon New York

I was recently in New York for The Makeup Show, but whenever I'm in New York I love experience New York hair salons.  It's something about New York that refreshes me and my hair.  It's been two years since I decided to go from super short to longer locks.  I do miss my short hair, but when I think of all the great hair products I get to play with - longer hair is worth it.

At the Hiro Haraguchi Salon I was treated to the ultimate scalp treatment featuring Yarok Sensory Treatment for Scalp and Hair.  I knew my scalp needed some TLC after this brutal cold winter, but I didn't realize how bad.  Yuko applied the treatment and administered the best scalp massage that literally she had to wake me up.

YarokSalonSpaKitThe scalp treatment was so mind-and-hair blowing that I had to find a salon near me to get the treatment next month.  Yuko used serums 2 and 7.  Serum 2 is used for hair growth and to stimulate the scalp.  Serum 7 is for blah hair which mine and no luster at all by the time I arrived in New York.  [Note to self: order 2 and 7 soon as possible].

I then sat under a hooded steam dryer for the serums to penetrate.  After a very thorough shampoo & condition it was time for my blowout.  This is for Penny.  Penny blow dried my hair to such perfection that my boyfriend barely recognized me as I walked down Madison Avenue.

Destination Pretty: Phyto Plage Suncare

Phyto Sun VeilA few days before I headed to Playa del Carmen I was able to have a nice long chat with Ted Gibson ("my hair boyfriend") on prepping the hair for summer.  The one sentence that I love him for is this:  "you can't expect city girl hair at the beach - it's the beach - think beach hair - relax."  So, when I decided to prepare my packing list I kept hearing Ted's glorious voice in my head - "beach hair."

I decided to test out his theory with the Phyto Plage Sun Care products.  My choice was the Phyto Plage Sun Veilwhich I sprayed on my hair everyday before heading to the pool and the beach.  First, the scent is divine and second, it protected my hair from the sun.  I applied a small amount of conditioner with it, combed it through, and slicked my hair into a low chignon.  My hair returned home moisturized and conditioned.  TED IS A GENIUS.  I'm headed to the beach a few more times this year (Dominican Republic is on the radar for late summer) and I won't be leaving home with my Phyto Sun Veil.  Next on my list to try is the After Sun Mask.  In the meantime I will be spraying more Sun Veil - especially this weekend for a crab fest at the house.

Redken Goes Glam for Summer

By: Felicia C. Sullivan

Redken 1 As soon as temperatures break sixty on the east coast, sidewalk cafés offer alfresco dining and chilled wine in silver buckets, the queue for the tanning salon is endless, and everyone books appointments with their hair colorists to achieve a little share of pale. So it’s no surprise that bright, light shades are the must-have color this summer. At a recent Redken event held exclusively for a select group of beauty bloggers, Tracy Cunningham, Redken Creative Consultant for Color and Hollywood Colorist, revealed that “there are so many variations of blonde shades that clients want to play with to achieve the perfect beachy color this summer – from icy platinum blondes to cool dark blondes.”

David Stanko, Redken’s Haircolor Consultant, agrees, and with 57% of women in the U.S. coloring their hair, 23% of whom are going blonde, it’s critical to develop products to suit their needs whether they’re highlighted blondes or have ventured to a head of platinum. Stanko and Cunningham then introduced Redken’s Blonde Glam Collection, which includes in-salon haircolor and lightening solutions to at-home maintenance products, to create and maintain a beautiful range of blonde shades.

John Frieda Luminous Color Glaze Clear Shine

Jf_color_glaze_3 John Frieda's Luminous Color Glaze Clear Shine should be in every hair junkies basket. I have been using this product for a few months.  I alternate between clear and the brunette.  This glaze is awesome for an at-home glaze product.  You can use it three times a week on wet hair or once a week on dry.  Sometimes I put it on dry and at other times during my bi-weekly wash.

If you feel like your hair needs a little luster I suggest doing a really good deep condition and then apply this glaze.  Also for only $10 this will give your winter hair a great perk.  I have sometimes mixed the brunette and the clear together and applied them to my hair.  This isn't on the box, but I create my own concoction.  I let my hair air dry and then blow dry and flat iron in the morning. Perfection with shine.

Ouidad: After Two Decades, I Embraced the Curl

By Felicia C. Sullivan

Ouidad - FS Few of my friends know that I have curly hair, really curly hair. And I’m not talking about the tousled, free-spirited locks that flounce down red carpets, or the shiny curls roller-set to perfection: the kind of curl every girl with pin-straight hair covets. Rather, I’m alluding to the thick, kinky variety – the tempestuous hair no one wants. The kind of tight kink that gave Dominican women in tiny Bronx salons a workout, the kind that keeps you trapped in a hothouse bathroom for hours with tools, products and towels – all in an effort to look like the pretty girls in magazines. My hair (read: the black forest), is that curly, that thick, that much. And when you grow up in a suburb where everyone is preened and blond and every girl dreams of being kick-team captain, and then when you attend a college filled with the people you thought you’d left behind, a part of you simply wants to blend in. A part of you wants that hair as straight and shiny as it could possibly, or unnaturally, be.

For two decades, I endured everything from wretched, ammonia-laden chemical treatments that caused my hair to fall out in clumps to scalp burns from cheap blow dryers to ignorant shampoo girls’ snide comments to expensive hour-long blowouts – all for the sake of hiding my textured hair and walking outside with straight, luminous locks. In between blowouts, I’d wrap my hair in a tight bun, cover any sight of frizz or curl with headbands, pins, and clips. When my stylist announced that she was going away on holiday in the middle of my book tour, I collapsed into tears in the middle of the street. During a two-year relationship, I never dared to have my partner see me with wet hair. My hair has always been my Achilles heel, so the idea of wearing it natural, letting it curl, was inconceivable. I feared the humidity, temperature variations, the unruliness, and the inevitable Chia-pet comparisons! However, over the past few years I’ve dealt with my issues of identity and self-esteem, from which my hair was its unfortunate victim, and have to come realize that the act of blending in would deny my friends and loved ones access to everything (the good, the bad, and the curl) that makes me undeniably me.

Destination Pretty - Ted Gibson's Travel Essentials Kit

TG Discovery Kit Look at what Ted created for me because he knows how much I love to go. So false. Actually he created it for Anne Hathaway. Anne is Ted's muse and I'm sure with her jet-setting schedule she needed his products when she travels. I'm not taking it with me to St. Croix next week, but I will be taking it somewhere.  The TG Travel Essentials Kit comes with the following: daily cleanse, daily nourish, beautiful hold hair spray, and 3 styling sheets.  I will probably give this to my niece who's going to the Bahamas next month for her first girlfriend getaway.

John Masters Organics Shine On

John Masters Organics Shine One I didn't realize that Whole Foods sold John Masters products. While doing a little grocery shopping I made my way to the beauty aisle. I couldn't help it, it was calling my name. There I decided to try john masters organics shine on. I have been reading great things about the products, but I wanted to test it for myself.  It is what a great shine product should be - moisturizing, doesn't add weight, and doesn't flake.  You can use it wet or dry.  I prefer the dry way to achieve my look.  I usually take a dime-sized amount and run it through my curls.  It isn't heavy either.  Just shine.

Hela Spa - Chevy Chase and Ted Gibson

TG If you ever get the chance to visit DC the first thing you realize is how close everything is to one another. You can be in the center of DC and 15 minutes later be in Maryland or Virginia. When I heard that Ted Gibson was partnering with Hela Spa to bring his wonderful New York fabulousness to the D/M/V I couldn't wait to see the collaboration.  I was fortunate to get a tour of the new spa and the hair salon during inauguration week. I can attest for the wonderful massage and facial services, but I will say it's a great treat to now be able to hit up Neiman Marcus, Border's, J. Crew, and visit Hela.

PS MHB The spa is chock-full of great products and after realizing my love of Phyto products and the PhytoSpecific in general it's great to have them at Hela. The stylist Bill worked wonders on my hair with a Phyto analysis and I left with my hair soft and shiny. I will be visiting Bill after my vacay next month because the beach always wrecks havoc on my hair.

The PhytoSpecific Moisturizing Styling Balm is now a staple in the beauty closet per Bill.

Here's a photo of Ted and I from Spring 2009 Fashion Week in NY.  He's definitely my hair boyfriend.

Power Down and Unwind with Paul Mitchell

By Felicia C. Sullivan

PM Special

Until last year you couldn’t pay me to try, let alone, use another hair product. I worshipped at the Kérastase altar and I would not entertain false prophets. When you have the sort of hair I do – coarse, thick, curly, dryness-prone – and you’ve patiently listened to marketing execs who swear that their product alone will alleviate the frizz, calm the kink, and moisturize the scalp, all the while you require a village to tame your hair, still, it’s no surprise that over the years you’ve become skeptical. When people sing the praises of John Frieda’s Frizz Ease, it takes everything in me not to laugh and sagely shake my head: you don’t know frizz. For me, it was Kérastase or bust.

But that was before the dandruff situation of winter 2008. Did you know that that the overdevelopment of a specific kind of scalp fungus causes dandruff? Not pretty, I assure you, and since I was embarking on a book tour I was adamant about controlling the flakes. When my long-time trusted stylist suggested I use Paul Mitchell’s Tea Tree Special Shampoo, my skepticism resurfaced. However, she assured me that the shampoo is a godsend for those prone to dandruff and dry scalp – the Special formula smoothes, softens, and helps prevent moisture loss. And who wouldn’t want their hair to smell like lavender and mint? I soon welcomed the cool sensation and tingling that accompanied my weekly shampoo. Simply put, my hair felt clean. A few weeks later the flakes were tempered considerably and I noticed a post-blow-out sheen.

Viviscal Hair Vitamins for Women

ViviscalI really have enjoyed this Live Your Best Life Series because there is a something for everyone.  Today's topic is money and the fabulous Suze Orman will be giving a lively discussion.  Right now money is a huge topic for everyone.  When I decided to become a beauty junkie at an early age I knew there were certain things that I had to give up.  I can't afford to be a car person and an expensive skincare person.  Therefore, I'm the latter.  I also thankful for a job that offers overtime because that has allowed me to travel to fabulous locations.

It's also given me the ability to try out products such as my new hair vitamin discovery Viviscal.  Viviscal has given my hair a significant hair jump.  I only took 1 people to stretch the supply longer and I noticed growth.  My next batch I used in conjunction with the GNC and once again - hair growth.  The key to most hair vitamins is consistency.  You have to faithfully take them.  I know between multi-vitamins and other supplements it seems that I am taking a lot of pills a day, but it's so worth it for healthy hair.

AATP in the Washington Post and PhytoSpecific Hair Relaxer

Phyto_relaxerToday the Live Your Best Life Series focuses on health.  I have made all the necessary doctor's appointments for my yearly check ups, but today I'm focusing on healthy hair.  After starting this hair journey last May I'm so excited about all the new products I now get to try.  It's also fitting that today, I have been featured in the Washington Post in an article about African-American women and healthy hair choices.  It's fate I tell you.  Fate.

My healthy hair choice started with  me researching new hair relaxers.  I know it's still has chemicals, but so does lip gloss and I'm not giving that up.  But, I am in love with this relaxer.  You know the kind of love where you figure out what to give up in order to have it in your life.  This PhytoSpecific Phytorelaxer is one of those things.  The way my hair feels is worth every cent.  I know there are lot of relaxers for African-American women, but this one is by far THE BEST I HAVE EVER USED. The way it leaves my hair is soft, moisturized, and bouncy.  There is no latte in the world to ever make me give it up.

Sedu Revolution Nano Ceramic Tourmaline Hair Styler

Sedu_revolution Sedu Revolution Styling Iron has rocked my hair world.  Everyone is talking about.  My friend Johnica explained this new hair tool as "changing the way I view styling irons."  Okay Ms. J.  She was like "Julia just buy it."  I wavered for a few good weeks until her email arrived with a photo - "my hair on Sedu."  I was hooked.  It's amazing.  The curls that this iron creates resembles a roller set.  I am officially hair obsessed. It took me a minute, but if you have ever been around Amber from the BBJ, well it rubs off on you.  It's osmosis.  Because of Amber and Johnica I have a new "hair situation."  I can't wait to see how my situation works out tonight.

Have a safe and beauty-filled New Year's Eve.

Redken Chemistry: An Evening with David Stanko

By:  Felicia C. Sullivan

Redken_chemistryWith almost fifty years of experience as a leader in the professional hair care product market, with distribution in over sixteen thousand salons in the U.S. (and growing), Redken has solidly established itself as the go-to brand for transformative, wallet-friendly styling products. In an era where stress is high and belt-buckling is the norm, the newly renovated and repackaged Redken Chemistry line promises to treat distressed hair as a result of chemical (highlighting, coloring, perming or relaxing) and/or mechanical processes (normal hair wear from blow-drying, flat-ironing, or curling). Distressed hair can cause hair to become dry, brittle, damaged, and devoid of sheen and health.

Remember the days when a salon treatment involved a thick, gluttonous application of conditioner, various head dressings, and thirty-minutes immersed in your own personal head sauna? Sadly, those days are still my reality. But rejoice! Gone are the 1950s hair dryers and costly treatments, as Redken Haircolor Consultant and stylist at New York’s Angelo David Salon, David Stanko showed me how my stylist can protect and condition my locks in as little as 15 minutes and for as low as $15. Seriously, where do I sign?

Sebastian Whipped Creme

Whipped_creme_3 I used to use Sebastian on my hair many moons ago.  Since I decided to grow my hair long after 10 years of short hair, I'm back to enjoying the line.  But they have revamped, revised, and regrouped and created such a great product in their Sebastian Whipped Creme that I wonder how I've been getting by without it.

During Fashion Week, I went to a press event to launch the new Sebastian, along with Cory Kennedy (Internet star and spokesmodel).  After using it, running out, and then re-purchasing it I knew it was a keeper.  But with all great hair products I still need it in travel size.  The mousse is completely different than any other mousse you will use.  It's so light, non-drying, and luscious that a little goes a long way.  I use a small amount before I flat iron to curl my hair.  The curls are bouncy, beautiful, and not heavy.  Wowzers.

Redken Spring/Summer '09 Trends with Guido Palau

Ladies, my NY guest editor - the awesome Felicia Sullivan (writer extraordinaire - her book The Sky Isn't Visible from Here is her deeply poignant memoir ) attended this event and has all the tips for spring and summer hair.  This arctic blast of goal here are on the east coast has many of us dreaming of sun, summer, and sand.

Heat_styling_renovationThere was the Kate Moss unkempt chic of the 1990s, the sleek, iron-straight locks of the 2000s, and now the loose, bohemian waves made popular by a certain Gossip Girl – but what’s next? Luckily, Redken Creative Consultant and runway hair stylist since the 90s, Guido, offered his take on the future of hair as styled and seen on the Spring/Summer 2009 runways. Guido also revealed how you can easily transform your hair from runway to realway with quick styling tips and protective products. And good news: classic is back!

From the runway shows in New York, Milan London and Paris, there was no defined look for the SS09 season. Perhaps it’s a reflection of our climate of global economic uncertainty, but designers opted for a more subdued look, with styles that stayed close to the head. Loose hair was the exception, not the rule.

Destination Pretty: PureOlogy 2008 Holiday Hydrate Kit

Pureology_2008_holiday_hydrate_kit_ Just in time for the holidays and for a few of my weekend getaways, one of my favorite hair care lines PureOlogy has thought of me.  Well, maybe they didn't think of me personally, but they thought of all the people who want to try their line but needed a little incentive.  I give you the Holiday Hydrate Kit. I have two weekends of back-to-back travel and girlfriend is going to need all the hydration she can get with this cold weather.  The kit contains 2 ounce sizes of the Hydrate Shampoo, Conditioner, Instant Repair and InCharge Plus Finishing Spray.  All the products I need to look cute in two different climates. PureOlogy, maybe you should consider adding these sizes to the permanent collection.

MWAH!  Love you, mean it!

Destination Pretty: Philip B Travel Kit

Philip_b_3 I recently found out I have a weekend getaway later this month and I can't wait to test out the Philip B Travel Kit.  I have fallen hard - REALLY hard - for the Philip B African Shea Butter Shampoo.  Now, Philip B has all my favorites in an easy travel kit.  I love testing products in a small kit because this way I can decide if it's worth buying the products in full sizes.  I am thinking that the Deep-Conditioning Creme will be great in this winter weather and that the Peppermint and Avocado Shampoo can work after a workout.

The kit contains the following:

  • African Shea Butter Shampoo
  • Scent of Sante Fe Shampoo
  • Deep-Conditioning Creme
  • Peppermint and Avocado Shampoo

Paris: Rene Furterer

Rene Furterer salon was one of the true highlights of the trip.  I had the best scalp and hair treatment and I was delightfully pleased that the stylist could actually work on African American hair.

Rene_furterer

After my wonderful treatment (which I did the mask again this weekend), I had beautifully soft hair.  I had a wonderful light lunch at Laduree, my favorite tea house in Paris.

Laduree

I had a long and fun dinner at Le Grand Colbert, the restaurant which was featured in Something's Gotta Give.  It's one of those places where the atmosphere merits that you will have a great time . . . and the Kir Royale's don't hurt either.

I Won a Trip to Paris. Thank You L'Oreal and Total Beauty

Bonjour mademoiselles.  Remember when I posted last week about my L'Oreal Feria Shimmering Colour party sponsored by Total Beauty  and L'Oreal.  Well, the votes are in.  I WON A TRIP TO PARIS!!!.  I along with 2 other fabulous bloggers are heading to the City of Lights.  Becky, the last pick was the deciding factor for the party.  A big MWAH! to Robin, Joanna, Kelly, and Becky who attended my party.

Gertrude Stein said "America is my country and Paris is my hometown."  Gertrude, I feel the exact same way.  I'm listening to the fabulous Eartha Kitt and today my life is definitely C'est Si Bon.

Au Revoir et A bientot.

Destination Pretty: T3 Mini Flat Iron

T3_mini_flat_iron_3I couldn't let another DP round up happen without including this pink hair gem.  I don't travel anywhere without my beloved T3 Mini Pink Iron.  I have been traveling with this flat iron for a few months and I still get joy from using it.  I have reached the age where I got tired of taking my larger flat iron around the globe in a suitcase.

I picked up the T3 for its function and size.  It's perfect for curling a ponytail or your entire head if you like.  It's small enough to fit in a tote bag.  It gets really hot so be sure to check the gauge to make sure it's on the perfect setting for your hair.  I'm thinking about buying the matching dryer because I can't get it out of my mind.  I want to pack them both in their own protective case.  I think another Touch of Ivy case for my hair tools would be perfect.
