Over the past few years, I realized I have always lived by the motto All About the Pretty. Since starting my blog almost a decade ago tomorrow (March 12 was the official first post – where did the time really go), so many changes have happened. I’m no longer working as a legal assistant and single. I’m married, pursuing a very different and exciting career path (more in the next few months), about to resume traveling after my surgery in November, and deciding to make changes I’ve been planning for awhile but was afraid. I’m biting the preferable bullet.
This blog has allowed me to meet good, smart, and engaging people in the world not in terms of just work, but in real world connections. I have so many friends and I thank God every day for Tia Williams encouraging me to start a blog in March 2006. Neiman Marcus fueled so many amazing posts and my love of travel allowed me to believe it was never too late to start something you love. Travel was a big part of my life before the word blog entered my mind. My yearly beauty trips to Paris started in 2002. I’ve had so many amazing opportunities and look forward to what is to come.
The experiences I’ve had because of All About the Pretty are too vast to name here. I have beautiful memories and the best thing about having a blog is the space to read them and re-live them any given time.
Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere in the online space, but moving and switching everything over to what fits me at this time in my life, just me – JuliaConey.com.
Beauty. Life. Travel. Stories.
Join the pretty party in my new home next week.
This site will continue to live here, but if you want to continue to read and follow along please support the new site. Thank you for 10 years of beauty-FULL love.
Here’s to looking for more adventures in life that are All About the Pretty.
NouriTress Perfect Hair Products came across my desk at the perfect time and my hair needs all the nourishing it can get. In winter, my skin has a tendency to be really dry. Sahara dry if I don’t handle properly and my scalp tends to do the same. I don’t have much hair on the top of my head, but I love a good hair product, especially when I need it.
NouriTress is a line based on treating hair from the scalp and this is what actually makes your hair healthy. I’ve been using the products for the past few weeks and my scalp and I are very happy. The products have a slight tingle. I love a good hair tingling situation. It makes me feel I’m getting a treatment in a salon. I use the leave-in as a pre-treatment under hair mask and my dry scalp has been happy with the results. The products get my hair squeaky and don’t dry it out.
I haven’t been working out so I can’t tell how they are going to work with sweat, but I have a good idea they will work well. I can definitely see using this product in the summer after multiple trips to the beach.
My beauty arsenal is filling up with lots of masks. I’ve been needing so much hydration and moisture in my skin with these cold temperatures and masks are fun, easy, and the good ones work. Here are three masks I’m currently loving and actually do their beauty job. Yes, they make you look like Hannibal Lecter, but I suggest pouring yourself a nice glass of wine (I’ve been sipping big Cabernet Sauvignons all winter), read a good book, and bask in the beauty of the mask.
Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Concentrated Recovery PowerFoil Mask. I finally received my Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair masks and they live up to their namesake Estee Lauder Advanced Repair Products. Love, love, love.
Hada Labo Tokyo Ultimate Anti-Aging Facial Mask. I fell hard for Hada Labo last year and I am still repurchasing them. They have a great price point and I like how my face feels after this mask.
SK-II Facial Treatment Mask. This is the mask I use when I’m been running around and not treating my skin so great. It’s the only mask I use after I’ve been traveling and also take with me on all my trips. It works.
I am grateful I live at a time where beauty gadgets are all the rage and fun. I treat my beauty gadgets like precious cargo because they are. I can’t imagine going without them even when I didn’t know I needed them. I have been playing with Tria’s Age-Defying Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser over the past few months and I have fallen hard and my eyes have never looked better. I’ve said it before. I’m not the best sleeper as I’ve stated before, so my eyes have taken a hit. I prefer a cold dark room for sleep, but I’m married to a man who likes the heat on hell.
On those nights I don’t sleep well or wake up in formation, I use my lovely Tria laser to make me look a whole lot better. I love using the laser, wearing concealer (the secret of the universe) and going about my day looking like I slept ten hours instead of four.
I was first introduced to the Tria world with their at-home laser treatment. Although I never used it, I was intrigued. The eye laser is a genius product and only takes two minutes. Ladies, you have two minutes. Don’t get me wrong. I love my laugh lines, but this laser helps me look awake and make me love them more.
A skincare line based on serums you ask? Yes. I always tell women serums are the bees knees when it comes to skincare. In my beauty routine, they are the foundation. RevelationsRX by Nuvesse Skin Therapies is a line of skin therapy solutions including roll-on hydrating serums and biocellulose masks that recently came into my beauty arsenal and I can definitely say I’m hooked.
Sheet masks are all the beauty rage right now and I see why. They are convenient, easy to use, and you notice effects immediately. I love to use a mask with my facials. It’s the finishing touch to making my skin feel soft and supple.
The transformative product to me is the Deep Hydrating & Brightening Anytime Serum Roller. Yes, roll-on. As a traveler, this makes me happy that I can add it to my carry-on bag and not worry TSA is going to hijack my beauty routine. This is sheer and utter genius. I couldn’t stop playing with the serum. Brilliant.
I’m traveling later this month and the next few months and I can’t wait to take these products with me. I like to maintain a full beauty routine on the road and RevelationsRX just made this a whole lot easier.
Well, hello there friends. How have you been? I’ve been recovering well on this end and feeling I can finally get back to writing on the business of all things beautiful. I recently had a conversation with a good friend and we were discussing how life is about simple luxuries. If you follow me on Instagram (you really should) I have added the slogan as a hashtag. This surgery taught me so much about myself and really about my husband. Talk about a trooper.
I recently decided to up my retinol usage for my skin. I was in my hospital room doing my normal skin routine and realized some of the products I was using was working and some it wasn’t. There’s nothing like harsh hospital lighting to make a girl rethink her entire beauty routine. I didn’t know if it was all the medication or the fact that I wasn’t on my normal eating schedule, but I felt my face lacked a little sumthin’ sumthin’. I decided during my recovery to stalk a few retinol products to try and I wanted to try the ones which were getting rave reviews.
Then Sunday Riley’s Luna Sleeping Oil and Good Genes came into my world. Well, darling – talk about a simple luxury. These two products together are like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the Golden Globes. Now here’s the thing darling. Once you start them you WILL become addicted. I mean addicted. My suggestion in case you aren’t ready to jump into the deep end of the Sunday Riley beauty hole is to get the starter set from Sephora. Your face will thank you. You need this is your beauty arsenal ASAP.
In my second review for Silk Therapeutics, I wanted to focus on power products I use in my skincare beauty routine. I know it seems that every beauty routine has to have you contoured like a reality star and a full face of makeup to go to the grocery store. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against that at all. What I find interesting is when all the makeup is removed the skin looks terrible. I have said it for years and now say it with me: pretty makeup looks good on pretty skin.
I don’t care how expensive the foundation, tinted moisturizer, concealer, and blush. If your skin looks bad underneath, maybe it’s time to get a better skin routine and ditch a lot of the makeup. Just saying.
With that being said let’s move back to power products. Power products are intense. They contain ingredients to diminish the look of fine lines and aid in the appearance of the skin. Basically, it gives the skin luster or a glow. Even during my hospitalization, I made sure I brought my beauty routine. Yeah, the nurses laughed and commented, but then they started asking questions on the products I brought with me to the hospital.
I am a big believer in using eye cream more and night. I don’t like a heavy eye cream that seems to sit on the skin. Applying to the orbital lobe by not pulling the skin. I like to pat my eye cream on then lightly rub. The Silk Therapeutics Eye Revive went on so smoothly I had all the nurses trying it. Now, my favorite product besides the peel is the Silk Intensive C Serum. Oh my goodness, this is some good stuff. If you haven’t added a serum to your beauty routine you must. I like a lightweight serum, especially when using a heavier moisturizer. This went on like velvet, is luscious, and nourishing.
My beauty conclusion? :My skin has never looked better and Silk Therapeutics will remain in the beauty arsenal.
I was contacted by the lovely people at Silk Therapeutics to try a few of their products for a few blog posts reviews. One of the reasons I decided to try the line is that it has so few ingredients. In the past, green beauty products looked crappy. I call it like I see it. I’m just gonna say it. I want luxury, functionality, and better ingredients.
In this round, I tried the Silk Renewing Peel and the Ultrasensitive Silk Smoothing Complex. I paired these two together because when I hear the word peel I want to climb under a rock. As a Black woman, peels have not always been good to me. As much as I love them, my face doesn’t. Although I don’t have sensitive skin, peels can be harsh.
I did a patch test first of the Silk Renewing Peel on my forearm and everything was okay. I then tested it on my face following the instructions. I am not usually good about following skincare instructions, but on this peel I did. I did it once a week for two weeks. The first time I tried it I noticed a tightness and glow. The second time it was obvious my skin was glowing…like a nightlight. I’m going to say this. I was a skeptic. A huge skeptic. I didn’t think products that had more natural ingredients could get the results I believed they could especially with a peel. Peels have a tendency to be harsh. Remember that episode from SATC where Samantha looked like a lobster after a peel. Yeah, no way girl.
I normally do my intense skin routine on Sundays. It prep for the week. I followed the peel up with the Ultrasensitive Silk Smoothing Complex because I wanted to stay in the same skincare family to hydrate my skin especially after a peel. My first thought was “why is it so light?” I’m heavy handed and love heavy moisturizers and wondered if this lightweight beauty could stand up to my standards. The next morning my skin looked better. It was due to getting a full 8 hours of sleep and this complex. I know it. Do I think this will work this winter? I’m hoping.
Here’s the kicker. I plan to buy this product. Again. I’m going through a crazy hormonal shift and I need all the help I can get. I’m interested in seeing how my next round of Silk Therapeutics products work on my skin. I’m curious and elated at the same time.
