Hello From the Beauty Side

Hello From the Other Side

Well, hello there friends. How have you been? I’ve been recovering well on this end and feeling I can finally get back to writing on the business of all things beautiful. I recently had a conversation with a good friend and we were discussing how life is about simple luxuries. If you follow me on Instagram (you really should) I have added the slogan as a hashtag. This surgery taught me so much about myself and really about my husband. Talk about a trooper.

I recently decided to up my retinol usage for my skin. I was in my hospital room doing my normal skin routine and realized some of the products I was using was working and some it wasn’t. There’s nothing like harsh hospital lighting to make a girl rethink her entire beauty routine. I didn’t know if it was all the medication or the fact that I wasn’t on my normal eating schedule, but I felt my face lacked a little sumthin’ sumthin’. I decided during my recovery to stalk a few retinol products to try and I wanted to try the ones which were getting rave reviews.

Then Sunday Riley’s Luna Sleeping Oil and Good Genes came into my world. Well, darling – talk about a simple luxury. These two products together are like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the Golden Globes. Now here’s the thing darling. Once you start them you WILL become addicted. I mean addicted. My suggestion in case you aren’t ready to jump into the deep end of the Sunday Riley beauty hole is to get the starter set from Sephora. Your face will thank you. You need this is your beauty arsenal ASAP.

ABOUT FACE WITH SILK THERAPEUTICS SKINCARE – Part 2

Silk Therapeutics 2

In my second review for Silk Therapeutics, I wanted to focus on power products I use in my skincare beauty routine.  I know it seems that every beauty routine has to have you contoured like a reality star and a full face of makeup to go to the grocery store. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against that at all. What I find interesting is when all the makeup is removed the skin looks terrible. I have said it for years and now say it with me: pretty makeup looks good on pretty skin.

I don’t care how expensive the foundation, tinted moisturizer, concealer, and blush. If your skin looks bad underneath, maybe it’s time to get a better skin routine and ditch a lot of the makeup. Just saying.

With that being said let’s move back to power products. Power products are intense. They contain ingredients to diminish the look of fine lines and aid in the appearance of the skin. Basically, it gives the skin luster or a glow. Even during my hospitalization, I made sure I brought my beauty routine. Yeah, the nurses laughed and commented, but then they started asking questions on the products I brought with me to the hospital.

I am a big believer in using eye cream more and night. I don’t like a heavy eye cream that seems to sit on the skin. Applying to the orbital lobe by not pulling the skin. I like to pat my eye cream on then lightly rub. The Silk Therapeutics Eye Revive went on so smoothly I had all the nurses trying it. Now, my favorite product besides the peel is the Silk Intensive C Serum. Oh my goodness, this is some good stuff. If you haven’t added a serum to your beauty routine you must. I like a lightweight serum, especially when using a heavier moisturizer. This went on like velvet, is luscious, and nourishing.

My beauty conclusion? :My skin has never looked better and Silk Therapeutics will remain in the beauty arsenal.

About Face with Silk Therapeutics Skincare

I was contacted by the lovely people at Silk Therapeutics to try a few of their products for a few blog posts reviews. One of the reasons I decided to try the line is that it has so few ingredients. In the past, green beauty products looked crappy. I call it like I see it. I’m just gonna say it. I want luxury, functionality, and better ingredients.

In this round, I tried the Silk Renewing Peel and the Ultrasensitive Silk Smoothing Complex. I paired these two together because when I hear the word peel I want to climb under a rock. As a Black woman, peels have not always been good to me. As much as I love them, my face doesn’t. Although I don’t have sensitive skin, peels can be harsh.

I did a patch test first of the Silk Renewing Peel on my forearm and everything was okay. I then tested it on my face following the instructions. I am not usually good about following skincare instructions, but on this peel I did. I did it once a week for two weeks. The first time I tried it I noticed a tightness and glow. The second time it was obvious my skin was glowing…like a nightlight. I’m going to say this. I was a skeptic. A huge skeptic. I didn’t think products that had more natural ingredients could get the results I believed they could especially with a peel. Peels have a tendency to be harsh. Remember that episode from SATC where Samantha looked like a lobster after a peel. Yeah, no way girl.

I normally do my intense skin routine on Sundays. It prep for the week. I followed the peel up with the Ultrasensitive Silk Smoothing Complex because I wanted to stay in the same skincare family to hydrate my skin especially after a peel. My first thought was “why is it so light?” I’m heavy handed and love heavy moisturizers and wondered if this lightweight beauty could stand up to my standards. The next morning my skin looked better. It was due to getting a full 8 hours of sleep and this complex. I know it. Do I think this will work this winter? I’m hoping.

Here’s the kicker. I plan to buy this product. Again. I’m going through a crazy hormonal shift and I need all the help I can get. I’m interested in seeing how my next round of Silk Therapeutics products work on my skin. I’m curious and elated at the same time.

Evan Healy French Rose Clay Mask

FullSizeRender-1

I discovered Evan Healy products at the National Products Expo a few months ago. The expo all types of natural products, but my thing is the beauty. The lovely people at Evan Healy gave me a flew samples and I blew through them fast, but I had to give them a real “try.” I went to Whole Foods with a friend to pick up the signature item I wanted – the French Rose Clay Mask.

I am slowly incorporating natural products into my skincare and beauty routines. I’m glad that more green beauty products are actually pretty to look at. I remember when they were hideously ugly and lacked the prettiness I need in my products.

Evan Healy gives me pretty packaging and they actually work. I have been using this mask every week for a month and I am still in love with it. It’s different than lots of masks because you have to mix it with water. I like to think it makes the application feel more like a spa. And I always use a brush now because I’ve ruined many a manicure with remnants of a goopy mask under my nails.

My next Evan Healy purchase will be the Rose Day Moisturizer. I plan to use it in the spring because it’s not heavy enough for my skin in winter.

Testing Out Tria Age-Defying Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser

vsco-photo-1

I’m all for working on skincare without doing something too radical. I’m not against fillers and botox. For me, I don’t want to use them. So I will test out, swab, swipe, smear, rub, and press. When the lovely folk at Tria asked me to test their Tria Age-Defying Eye Wrinkle Correcting Laser I said sign me up. For the next month, I will be testing the Tria to see if it lives up to the hype.

I will say the reviews are great and I haven’t been this excited to try an electronic face device in a long time. The one thing I love about the Tria is the size. It’s so tiny and is a great size for traveling.

Stay tuned.

My New Beauty Find: Folie Apothecary

IMG_3789

I remember the minute I discovered Folie Apothecary. One of my good friends posted an interview with the creator on Facebook. I read the interview and everything about Nikisha Brunson and Folie spoke to me. I had recently decided to start making my own whipped shea butter and I watched Nikisha’s video on how to do. Super easy. But there was something else about her in the video. She was funny, warm, charming, and seemed like a girl I wanted to hang out with over wine, tacos or green juice. Balance is key people. I immediately decided to make a purchase.

I bought the Rose + Chamomile Face Scrub and I can tell you it’s going to be a repeat purchase. A sample of Folie’s serum and a bag of tea was included in my purchase. What really made this special was the hand-written thank you note. I’m a sucker for a thank you note. It could be my Southern upbringing, but there is something special in receiving a note in a world of electronics.

I let the scrub sit on my face a few minutes while I enjoyed the tea. Delightful, thoughtful, and lovely. I highly suggest you check out Folie and support Nikisha. She is definitely a woman who creates the pretty.

Neutrogena Ultra Light Cleansing Oil

IMG_3434

I woke up this morning and had to really ask myself if it’s still autumn because it is cold. I mean coat cold. I had to put the lightweight jacket away this morning and put on the puffy coat. It’s too soon for this in my mind.

Cleansing oils have been very popular over the past few years and I like them a lot. I mainly use them as a makeup remover because they melt everything off. One problem I have if the oils are too heavy and then they just sit on your face. Also, I don’t like oils that need cajoling to wipe off. I don’t have to worry about this with the Neutrogena Ultra Light Cleansing Oil. It is so light and cleansing that one pump cleans my entire face. The beauty of this product is there is no oily residue on your face. That’s why I don’t use coconut oil to cleanse my face. Too greasy even after multiple washes.

If you are on the fence about cleansing oils I highly recommend this one. It’s great for the lovely winter we are having this fall.

P.S. I”m obsessed with this essentia alkaline water. I buy it by the case at grocery store and it is so good for your body.

CHANEL Beauty: Blue Rhythm de Chanel Nail Polish and Mascara

Chanel 1

I was recently at my favorite store, Neiman Marcus for a charity fashion show, but, of course, I made my way to the beauty counter. After perusing a few of the new fall products, I fell hard for Chanel’s Blue Rhythm de Chanel Fall Beauty Line. I saw the nail polish ad in the magazines, but I knew the nail polish needed to be seen in person. I didn’t even look at the eyeshadows because I still have nightmares about blue eyeshadow from the 80s.

I was so happy that when my friend and beauty junkie Sydelle talked me into the sparkly mascara I knew I needed to add them to the beauty arsenal. Fortissimo is a stunning deep navy with a slight shimmer and perfect for fall and winter. I cannot get enough. The mascara is sparkly and fun to wear. I like to feather it on the out lashes to make my eyes really pop.

I will say I have fallen back in love with Chanel polishes. Over the past few months, I have realized the quality of my beloved Essie polishes has gone down hill. Every bottle is streaky, patchy, and takes way too many coats. Especially since I polish my nails at least twice a week. I have been seriously disappointed. This has allowed me to focus on polishes that bring the beauty and are worth the investment like Chanel.

I have my eye on the Chanel Écorce Sanguine Nail Polish too. It has just enough sparkle where I know I’m not wearing a polish with shimmer, but creamy enough to add to my red nail polish collection.

{The photo shows the polish in two different lights. Stunning.}
