I was sick as a dog on yesterday. Food poisoning. I spent Saturday night in a deep fetal position, missed a friend’s birthday party, and felt horrible for hours. It never is pretty having food poisoning and I absolutely hate being sick. I don’t know if my body was telling me to slow down, but I am thankful le husband rushed home to take care of me. I knew the minute I started feeling better last night because all I wanted to do was take a long bath and give myself an at-home facial.
Although I was sick I planned a few blog articles, made a Sephora purchase (extra beauty points), and scheduled some yoga sessions. I flipped through the first September magazine that arrived on Saturday. How is is this possible? I have a never ending quest to always have the ever present bronzy highlighter on my cheekbones. Chantecaille’s Cheek Illuminators recently came into my beauty arsenal and I can’t get enough of them. Yep, I’m a hippie. Beachy, bronze, and salt water all day long.
I use them separately and together. They are perfect for giving you that summa summa summertime glow, but I can’t wait to add them to my travel collection and use them in the fall. Did I really just type “fall.” Say it isn’t so? Fall can’t be this close. I’m not ready. I’m still reveling in my cheekbones and all that Chantecaille is bringing to the shimmy shimmy party.
P.S. A few weeks ago I talked about my meditation tools and what helped me get started. I started with the Oprah and Deepak Chopra 21-day Meditation Challenge. Guess what? They are doing another one on Expanding Your Happiness and it started today. We all can use a few moments of quiet in our day. Try it. I guarantee you will love it.
I’m a sucker for a good blush. I like them in all variations – powder, cream, stick, and liquid. I wear it almost every day. I was intrigued when I heard Dr. Nicholas Perricone was creating a makeup line. He’s known for his amazing skin care and I knew the products would be great. But, I was a skeptic. A dermatologist with a makeup line? Was he stepping out of his lane? I’m glad he did.
I tried the No Blush Blush with SPF 30 and my first impression was this is going to be too light for my dark skin. I’ve tried many a blush that looks like I dusted pink flour on my cheeks. And not in a good way. Everything doesn’t work for ever body, but I was hoping this blush would. I realized it is a build-able blush and applied it lightly at first. When I say “build-able” I mean the first time you apply it you may go “where is it?” I applied a few more drops and the soft subtle pink is perfect for summer. I liked it – a lot. This is a perfect size for travel and I am in love. It’s also great because you won’t feel as your face is melting with it on.
I’m curious how the bronzer stacks up to most liquid bronzers. That’s next on my list.
Allow me to introduce bareMinerals bareSkin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 20. I admit I was never a fan of the bareMinerals mineral powders. No matter how much I tried they looked chalky, cakey, and ashy on me. It always looked like I had dusted my face in flour after applying them. I would see other women and they looked gorgeous with their products. I just figured that bareMinerals wasn’t my brand. And that’s okay. I don’t believe everything was meant for everyone. I am always willing to give beauty a second, third, and sometimes a fourth chance.
I was still reluctant to try their new product, but as a beauty girl I was still curious. Have they improved their range of colors? Is everything going to be ashy? Can a dark-skinned African-American woman wear their stuff? Would my face feel heavy wearing the product?
I’m Bare Mocha 20 in the product and I went in with high hopes. You apply the foundation with their patented brush and watch the magic happen. The brush helps the product glide on the skin and after only one round I was hooked. I normally don’t wear foundation every day, but since it’s not hot as hades yet I can see wearing this a few days a week. I added a little bronzer because I can’t live without some face shimmer and was good to go.
If you are curious about bareMinerals and didn’t go for their powders I suggest trying this foundation.
As you read this I will be flying the friendly skies to California. I’m headed there to run a race with my Hawaii girls Amber and Erika. I was planning on running the half-marathon, but because of this crazy cold winter I wasn’t able to run outside as much so I emailed the race committee and said put me in the 10K. It seems like it took forever to get here. We are running in Napa Valley so there will be lots of wine, beauty talk and laughter. After that I will be covering a few hotel and spas for review here. I’m grateful for this time. It’s been a doozy of a week and I’m looking forward to some fun. Here are my loves for the week.
Panic by Lauren Oliver. I can’t get enough of all these young adult novels with a dystopia them.
Nivea Kiss of Care & Color Lip Balm. It’s nice to have a sheer lip color balm and this one is on repeat in the beauty bag. It has just enough color for my brown lips and enough goodness that I’m not reapplying it like crazy. Sheer Crimson is everything to me right now.
NaturaAlmond Butter. I saw this almond butter on a person I follow Instagram and immediately knew I had to try it. It is everything I love in an almond butter – minimal ingredients and all natural. The products are only available in stores in the South, but I’m pushing my local Wegmans to get some for me.

Revlon has done it again for me. I’m a huge fan of their Colorburst lip line. I can’t get enough of these adorable lippies. My favorite has been Raspberry Pie. I’m on my third or fourth tube. I go through this stuff rather quickly. It gives me a bright lip and is super moisturizing. Now, Revlon is giving me more lip loving mojo. Why? The Colorburst Lip Lacquers in a stick form. Introducing the Revlon Colorburst Lacquer Balms. I was on the search to find them, but they were sold out at my Target, CVS, and Walgreens. I was making my weekly grocery store run yesterday and decided to swing by the beauty section. My heart stopped because they were putting them out on display. I had to get another Vivacious. Ladies, I suggest you go now and find your favorite color.
Target, one of my favorite destinations for affordable beauty has recently launched its Beauty Concierge. I made a date with one of the local stores in the DC area to meet Will. He’s the official Beauty Concierge for the Columbia Heights store. The concept of the beauty concierge is to bring the authority on beauty to mass market. Need a hair care suggestion? Ask Will. Can’t decide which BB cream to get for darker skin tones? Will can suggest two or three brands that you probably didn’t know had BB creams.
I admit when I go to Target I always head for the beauty section after my initial list of household items. It is that place where you go in planning on spending $20 and you walkout there with a receipt for well over $50. It happens. Will and I chatted about the latest and greatest in beauty and I couldn’t leave without a few items. I was glad that I was taking the metro and hadn’t driven otherwise my bag would have been a lot heavier.
Target’s Beauty Concierge is being rolled out into more stores and I suggest you stalk your local Target beauty aisles to find out when.
I am so in love with Estee Lauder’s Cello Shots for cheeks. This little pops of beauty color are absolutely perfect for a summer lightweight beauty face. The reason I love them is because they are so lightweight, but deliver so much color for the cheeks. I’ve actually used this on top of some of my blushes and it doesn’t feel heavy at all. I am a quick glistener.
Yes, I created this term because who wants to say they sweat a lot. I don’t. Well, these are perfect for the girl who glistens quickly. After a few days of spring-like temps, it’s been super hot here on the east coast and these beauties are in constant rotation on my face. I don’t care if fall is arriving in most stores, the heat is here until late September and I think you need these in your lifestyle.
It almost here. The time I get away, regroup, and press reset on my life. I have been looking forward to my Cancun trip this Saturday for a few months. I love Cancun and the ocean that feels like a warm blue bath. It is one of my favorite places to reconnect. I can’t head out of town with new essentials. I always like a new swimsuit, but it’s new beauty that gets me going. My new loot includes beauty, tons of sunscreen, multiple swimsuits, and reading materials. The first on the list is the new Bobbi Brown Sheer Lip Color in Pink Blossom. I love a bold lip, but at the beach I need something a little less pronounced. This color is just a hint of pink, moisturizing, and perfect for reapplying after multiple margarita sips. I save lipsticks for dinners in the evening. I can’t wait to pull this out at the beach while I’m getting my brown girl bronze on.
