Strange Invisble Perfumes ~ Prima Ballerina

I think most girls are obsessed with ballerinas. It starts early. Ballerinas are enchanting. My fascination started when my dad took me to my very first performance of the Houston Ballet’s Nutcracker. Year after year this was my birthday “date” with dad. As a young adult I saw Lauren Anderson as the Sugar Plum Fairy and was moved to tears watching her dance. To see an African-American woman in the role was powerful. The Nutcracker is my favorite ballet performance. Now, my love of ballet infuses my love of yoga. It’s the stretching, the lengthening, the movement, the clothes and legwarmers.

I find my inner ballerina with Strange Invisible Perfumes Prima Ballererina Scent. This scent is decadence in a bottle with notes of sage, lime, and rose. It’s sensual, lush, and has a quiet strength. The combination is delicate, yet strong. It reminds me of my dad. He was tough. Being a police officer made him that way, but his heart was made of gold and full of love. He was the first example of the kind of man I should be with. And I married a good one just like him. I’m thankful that I listened to his lectures even though I was rolling my eyes when he was giving them. He is terribly missed.

He has been gone almost 13 years, but it feels like yesterday I lost him. My birthday is next month and in my family birthdays are a big deal. It’s my own personal holiday. If he was around he would ask what his princess wanted for her birthday. He would orchestrate dinner, the ballet, and some diamonds to add to the mix. This year it’s another bottle of Prima Ballerina that I will purchase in his honor. The little girl in me will always see myself as his Sugar Plum Fairy.

Bali James Geishā Body Oil

I’m blessed to test, slather, rub, and try beautiful creations. It’s even better when they are created by smart, engaging and talented women. I call these “Women Who Create the Pretty.” The latest in my beautiful beauty world is Bali James Geishā Body Oil. Bali has created an extraordinary body oil that I can’t get enough of. My love for niche lines knows no bounds.

Maiko is a high quality coconut and Vitamin E oil scented with fig, vanilla, and lily. This is luxury in a bottle and is a perfect gift for yourself. The beautiful glass bottle and print brings this product out of the beauty arsenal to rest fully on my desk. It’s too pretty to hide. The only major decision is what body oil and product to try next.

Bonne Anniversaire to the Potion Lady

I don’t think I could top what I wrote last year for my mother’s birthday.  She’s still doing the same things and it’s such an inspiration to watch her and hope to one day follow in her footsteps.  If I’m half the mom she is then I will have done a great job.  She rocks my world.  When she visits she still appeases me and all my cooking shows, Sex and the City series and movies (she’s that cool), and The Last Emperor (Valentino documentary).

My mother loves poetry.  She has notebooks and binders full of her own poetry. So today, I rely on e.e. cummings to help me say Happy Birthday and I Love You!

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows

(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart

2010 Holiday Gift Guide: Kahina Beauty Travel Kit

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of attending the International Spa Association's Annual Conference.  It was a place where I felt inspired among all these products.  I discovered new and old favorites that I can't wait to bring to you.  One such brand is Kahina  Giving Beauty. Kahina's founder, Katharine Phillips L'Heureux created the line after a trip to Morocco and the source of pure argan oil.  "Kahina is named for a Berber queen and prophetess who reigned in Morocco circa 700 CE. A heroine to the Berber women, Kahina represents empowerment and vision for women worldwide."  It seems that my life currently exists in a carry-on so the perfect starter to the line is the Kahina Giving Beauty Travel Kit.  I'm looking forward to this travel size argan oil.

2010 Holiday Gift Guide: Stay by Heather Park

CD COVER FINAL3 After I've listened to all the Christmas music I can stand I need some real "grown folks" music to listen. I realize that I don't get a lot of today's music.  I want music that I'm not embarrassed to have in my car when my mother is riding with me, but I also want someone who can really sing.  So, this year it's Heather Park the original Seoul Diva.  No, I spelled Seoul correctly.  Heather is a talented singer and songwriter, friend, foodie, and fellow yogi.  This is the kind of music that warms my heart and has my head nodding to the beat.  This is a must have CD in the rotation.  If you are looking for real singing and real music. I need you get this CD.

The Tory Burch Foundation Celebrates National Business Womens Week

UPDATE: I've extended the contest until Monday, October 25.

I have a girl crush on Tory Burc.  It started with her ballet flats and then became a full-on obsession.   She is a travel junkie and many of her designs are inspired by her travels.  This week the fab Ms. Burch is celebrating National Business Women's Week which highlights the progress of female business owners in the U.S.  The Tory Burch Foundation also provides women with small business loans around the world to fight poverty and creat jobs.  She has a special collection that benefits the foundation and includes bracelets, flips, and a music CD with some of Tory's favorite tunes.

Om Pretty: Yoga Journal’s May Cover Model – Faith Hunter of Shakti Mind Body Studio

Yoga Journal I want to give a big MWAH of congratulations and praises to Faith Hunter of Shakti Mind Body Studio.  Faith is Yoga Journal's May 2010 cover model.  As an avid yogi it is rare when you see an African American person on the cover of this major main stream yoga magazine.  I can't help get goose bumps with excitement every time I look at the cover.  I subscribe to the magazine, but I made a special point to purchase a copy to let Yoga Journal know that it's great to see some diversity on their cover.  I've been to Shakti to practice and I can say the studio has amazing teachers.  Faith is a dynamic teacher and I faithfully use her podcasts when I travel because I can get my Om Pretty on anywhere.  She is a beautiful person inside and out.  If you are in DC I highly recommend paying Shakti a visit for your yoga practice. Faith, congrats doll! You make me proud to spell my name – Y-O-G-I.
